Brutus, the family’s cherished Bullmastiff from Northern California, holds a special bond with his unique toy, a plush yellow fluffball, unlike any other. This toy stands out as the sole survivor of Brutus’s usually destructive play, treasured and unharmed. “It’s his one indestructible companion,” Bonnie Michalek, Brutus’s human companion, shared with The Dodo.
Since welcoming Brutus into their home in 2016, the Michaleks have considered him an integral part of their family. “He was our first addition, my initial step into motherhood,” Michalek reflected, noting the distinction now that her son, Kayden, has joined the family 11 weeks ago.
The introduction of Kayden into the family was anticipated without worry, given Brutus’s known affection for children. “He’s always been drawn to the laughter of children,” Michalek observed. Interestingly, Brutus sensed the arrival of the new family member even before the Michaleks did, showcasing his intuitive connection with Michalek during her pregnancy.
As the family prepared for Kayden, Brutus was included every step of the way to ensure he felt a part of the evolving household dynamic. Upon Kayden’s arrival, Brutus stayed with Michalek’s parents, eagerly awaiting the moment he could meet his new human sibling. “When we brought him back, Brutus was more interested in Kayden than anyone else,” Michalek recalled. “He just wanted to shower him with kisses and cuddles.”
